"I have more patience and yell less when problems arise, and I'm becoming less engaged in disputes between the kids. We're working together more as a group."

"Now I am feeling more secure in my role as a rule maker, and I'm trying to give my family members more time and space to respond. And, my family feels and shows more of an attitude of teamwork."

Survival Skills for Healthy Families is a parent education program presented in six two-hour sessions. This class is offered in English and Spanish.

Research shows that well-functioning families share certain patterns. This class teaches practical skills that promote these patterns. Each class is organized around these skills, which are demonstrated and then practiced using role play, coaching and activities.

Families will learn:

Practical, lifelong skills to strengthen, support and empower your family.

    Steps for effective discipline.
Tools to manage your family in healthy ways.     How to bring out the best in each other.
Steps to resolve conflict.     How to build on the strengths of your family.
Skills to solve problems.     Alternatives to physical punishment.
Ways to encourage and support one another.   Skills to build self-esteem and self-confidence in parents and children.

Survival Skills for Healthy Families: Step Parenting follows the same curriculum as our regular Survival Skills class and also includes additional information that addresses the needs of step families.

"Now, I'm not getting hooked and I'm not rewarding negative talk by engaging. And there is more willingness on everyone's part to work and talk things out, of trying new ways of approaching the situation."

"If my husband and I disagree, we now discuss it rather than me taking the side of our child. Knowing how to work with him has been the greatest thing I've gotten from the Series."
